Head of School Search Committee and Process

Dear MCS Community,

We’re pleased to announce the launch of the MCS Head of School Search. Mark Nowlin and Ruth Kobayashi are the Search Committee’s Co-Chairs, while representatives from our parent and alumni parent communities make up the rest of this 9-person committee. In addition, the Search Committee will be supported by a Search Advisory Committee consisting of staff, parents, and grandparents. The full committee will work diligently and prayerfully to seek the right candidate for our next Head of School.

The Co-Chairs and Board have chosen Job Fit Matters as our search firm partner, which brings 40+ years of collective experience in senior leadership talent searches for Christian organizations.

As a board, we’ve spent a great deal of time meeting with former board members, advisors and experts to devise an approach aimed at successfully identifying, retaining, and on-boarding our new Head of School. National averages for this role are currently 3-4 years, and our goal is to find the right candidate that will far-surpass this average. Accordingly, we’ve analyzed and revised board policies, search committee composition, and board governance matters in an effort to develop a long-standing working partnership between the Head of School, board, administrative team and staff. Importantly, our approach remains steadfast in maintaining MCS’s mission to build a firm foundation through Christ-centered education.

The board and Co-Chairs agree that qualified internal candidates will be considered for our Head of School search. We’ll provide another update in early December soliciting input via a survey. Please keep this team in prayer as they move through the search process. We firmly believe that God has the right candidate ready for MCS and we seek His direction in our important search.

Located in beautiful Orange County, California, Mariners Christian School is an academically rigorous, decidedly Christian school currently serving an enrollment of 730+ TK-8th grade students with an approximate annual budget of $8 million. MCS has grown by 12% over the last five years, adding 80 students. Additionally, as part of a long-term comprehensive capital campaign launched in the fall of 2017, MCS began a multi-phase facilities enhancement program, bringing significant improvements to the curricular and co-curricular campus facilities. MCS is recognized as a premier school in Southern California, having received distinction as a National Blue-Ribbon School and an ACSI Exemplary School. As MCS launches this search for the next Head of School, the community is thoughtfully and prayerfully excited about the future of the school.
